What’s It For

Canary Foundation’s Twin Mission to find Breast Cancer Early – A Blood Test followed by a Safe Imaging Test

Canary Foundation is funding two forward thinking research projects that will lay the foundation for a new Breast Cancer Early Detection Program. One study will focus on finding biomarkers (cholesterol is an example of a biomarker) in the blood of women diagnosed with breast cancer that may indicate the presence of tumor growth. The ultimate goal will be to measure these blood biomarkers to detect breast cancer much earlier than the current norm when typical symptoms appear.

The second study will evaluate feasibility of a new imaging modality, photoacoustic imaging to detect cancer at earliest stages. Photoacoustic modality combines optical and ultrasound imaging to provide images of great resolution and contrast from deep within the tissue. As such it offers great potential in detecting tumors that are very small pinpointing the location for surgery or target therapies before the cancer has the chance to spread. Canary is committed to funding safe, efficient, cost effective tests for diagnosing cancer early.
